Canvas has an integrated tool for equations and scientific formulas based on LaTeX. You kan either work in the basic mode with point and click tools or the advanced mode where you can enter real LaTeX code. The result of your input will be rendered as an image with the LaTeX source as alternative text for the image.

Insert an equation

To insert an equation you either click the math icon or go to Insert in the menu and then Equation.

If you are not used to working with LaTeX it is recommended to use the Basic View. Read more on how to get started in the guide Canvas Equation Editor Tips: Basic View.

Using LaTeX (Advanced)

Canvas can handle both the AMS and TeX formulation, i.e. both \begin{pmatrix} ... \end{pmatrix} and \pmatrix{ ... } works.
